Nullius in Verba
I strongly believe in the idea expressed by the words Nullius in verba that are engraved across the stonework above the great bronzewood doors of the Royal Society (see the figure below). These words were adopted as the motto of the Royal Society in its First Charter in 1662. Translated, they say: ‘take nobody’s word for it’. This expresses the determination of Royal Society Fellows to: “… withstand the domination of authority and to verify all statements by an appeal to facts determined by experiment”. Mark Twain has Huckleberry Finn say this in a simpler way: “You saying’ so doesn’t make it so.”
